The Salt Lick

While driving around Driftwood, my family and I stopped for lunch at the Salt Lick. I’d heard a lot of hype surrounding this particular BBQ joint, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

The place is very unassuming. We actually drove by it earlier in the day and I didn’t even notice it! It has an outdoor picnic area, private dinning (you can even have your wedding at the Salt Lick! how very Texan) and a main restaurant with large tables and community style seating. The whole place is BYOB, which is pretty great and further enhances the relaxed atmosphere. All the employees were very polite, quick to attend to us and easy to chat with. One gentleman even moved some clutter out of the way for me when I was trying to take a photo of their glorious pecan pies! I’m sure they deal with exhausting and annoying tourists all day long, so he definitely didn’t have to go out of his way to help me. I was very impressed.

I ordered a mega iced tea and a pulled pork sandwich with all the sides (potato salad, coleslaw, beans, bread and pickles). Hands down, best pulled pork I’ve ever eaten. It was cooked perfectly, some parts slightly pink and some parts a little charred, and wasn’t super finely shredded. They just cut it off the pig, threw it on the fire, then slapped it on my sandwich. Even better than the pork itself, though, was the bun! It was just a white bun, but after being soaked in their special Salt Lick BBQ sauce and the juices from the pork, it was a soggy lump of deliciousness and flavor. The potato salad was also tasty. I’m not sure what the seasoning was (BBQ sauce??), but it was brownish in color and had a wonderfully unique flavor.

I also found the food reasonably priced! My pulled pork sandwich with sides was only $11. It was more food than I could eat in one sitting. We were to stuffed from lunch to order dessert, but I’ve heard their peach cobbler is to die for.

**Edit: Since writing this, I’ve been back to have the sausage and pecan pie. Both are excellent. The sausage plate is now my preferred meal.

**Edit (again): Since the first edit, I’ve had the peach cobbler with ice cream. It was delicious. Even BETTER than the pecan pie. I would drive out to the Salt Lick just for the peach cobbler.
