You know how much I love Gabriela’s Downtown, so when I was invited to try out Gabriela’s latest project, Taquero Mucho, I jumped at the opportunity. When I drove up to the all pink building, I knew I was in for a treat.
Thanks, Taquero Mucho, for inviting the Austin Food Blogger Alliance out to try some drinks and tacos! While we did get complimentary food, all thoughts are my own.
Taquero Mucho is an Instagrammer’s paradise. It’s all pink with palm frond wallpaper. There’s even a wall covered with pink flowers. The space isn’t large and fills up quickly, so I’d recommend arriving right when they open at 11am. You can park in the small lot in front (they validate!) or you can park on West Ave. for about $2 per hour. I will say, it’s a happenin’ place inside. It’s pretty loud, which is perfect for a fun gal’s brunch, less fun for a work meet-up or something where you’d really have to listen to one another.
The drinks and appetizers were similar to what you’d find at Gabriela’s Downtown – strong, tasty margaritas, choriqueso, elote, guacamole, salsa, and queso. They also have the same delicious, thick tortilla chips (so your chip won’t break when scooping up all the goodness!). In general, the drinks aren’t cheap, but they’re worth it. They’re definitely pouring with a heavy hand at Taquero Mucho and I appreciate it.
The pink esthetics reach far beyond the interior design. The drinks are colored pink with hibiscus and the tortillas are colored pink with beets! There’s something so fun about sipping a pink drink, while eating a pink taco, sitting next to a pink, flower-covered wall.
I tried one of their taco plates, which comes with two tacos, rice, and beans. I went with the crispy shrimp (breaded shrimp, cabbage, pico de gallo, dressing, and jalapeno-lime salsa). While the rice and beans were wonderful, I’d say the tacos were just fine. I’ve had tastier fried shrimp tacos elsewhere. These definitely weren’t bad! But they didn’t leave me dreaming about them like the Tipsy French Toast does at Gabriela’s Downtown. Also, Taquero Mucho has only been open for a few weeks, so they’re still training staff and working out the kinks! Just something to keep in mind if you visit sometime soon.
Side note: the bathroom is a must-visit. Pink cherry wallpaper, neon poop emoji, disco balls, and a nice little ring light for your #bathroomselfie.
Thank you so much for having us out, Gabriela and the Taquero Mucho team! We had a blast. Overall, I’d say visit knowing you’re going to love the space, enjoy delicious drinks and appetizers, and that you’ll be leaving with some incredible photos for your Instagram.
