My school has a SNOW DAY and my house (currently… knock on wood) has power, so let’s do an Austin Eats Round-Up!
Think of these posts as little glimpses into where I’m going and what I’m loving right now. I’m back working at school 5 days a week, which means I’m out and about for the first time since March. Of course, I’m always extremely cautious – I order takeout/curbside when possible, sit outside at well-spaced tables, and always wear my mask. I’ve been on a couple of patios lately and I must say, it feels really good to be OUT and DOING THINGS again.
I know things are constantly changing with COVID, but as for now, I’m open to doing outdoor activities! Comment on this post or over at @discoveringATX with your favorite patios/outdoor Austin activities!

Duck Donuts

I’m pretty much on a once-a-month donut kick right now. You already know Duck Donuts are my favorite (because cake donuts are life) and they just got EVEN BETTER. Duck Donuts now has chocolate cake donuts as an option. I’m a chocolate person, for sure, and MAN does Duck Donuts do it right. They are constantly doing fun assortments as well. As a part of the “Quack Pack,” I’ve been gifted two boxes of donuts over the last few months – their Holiday Assortment and their Love Assortment. They’re so fun and festive! I’m all for little things that bring joy right now and Duck Donuts is certainly one of those things.

I’ve been trying to do as much takeout beer as possible, since I’ve not sitting at any happy hours or touring any breweries. Hold Out Brewing (next to Better Half Coffee & Cocktails) has an awesome selection, but my favorites by far have been their bourbon barrel party juices. They’re out of stock right now (2/15/2021) but hopefully they’ll get more soon! I tried the Pineapple Upside-Down Bjorn and the S’mores again Texan. Both were EXCELLENT (and in 19oz cans). 10/10 would get again.

Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. Little Ola’s Biscuits was born when Olamaie temporarily closed its dining room in 2020. So while we don’t have Olamaie right now, we DO have Little Ola’s Biscuits and MAN is it popular. This take-away biscuit shop features Olamaie’s famous flaky biscuits conveniently delivered to your car. You can opt for full on sandwiches, like the sausage eggs and cheese breakfast sandwich or the fried chicken biscuit sandwich. Or you can just order the biscuits on their own with spreads. For the holidays, we also got some of their cinnamon rolls (delicious) and their to-go cocktails. Mega delicious. I must go back again soon!

As soon as photos of this tiny, industrial window started popping up on my instagram feed, I knew I had to visit. Little Brother’s Coffee & Kolaches is from the same team that brings you Little Brother Bar on Rainey. They’re still serving up “solid bevs” on South Congress, just in the form of your favorite espresso. Pair it with one of their rotating sweet and/or savory kolaches and you’re good to go.

It’s tradition now – every Christmas we order frozen take-and-bake cinnamon rolls from Teal House. I can’t believe how fresh and delicious those frozen rolls are. If you ask me, this is just the BEST little breakfast food truck. If you haven’t been yet, it’s totally worth it. One of my all-time favorites. Their cinnamon rolls – PERFECTION. The best in Austin. I also love their sausage and cheese kolache. It’s so simple and SO tasty. Their coffee is excellent too! With so many tasty treats in super high demand, it’s no surprise that they’ve decided to open a brick and mortar as well! I cannot wait to visit. They should be opening any day now… that’ll probably get its own post, so keep an eye out.

I’ve raved about Tiny’s Milk and Cookies ice cream on my “Top Places to get Ice Cream in Austin” blog, but their cookies are just as good on their own. I love these places with walk up windows. I’m often by myself when I go on a blogging run (even more so, with COVID). Little places like this make it way less awkward for me to just get my snack, snap some photos, and then leave. These cookies are so doughy and delicious – worth a stop if you’re driving by!

Speaking of little walk up windows… You gotta go toTry Hard Coffee! This unassuming patio on east 11th is serving up some incredible tacos and drinks. I recommend the veggie lunch taco: avocado, roasted potatoes with herbs, pico, serrano, and queso fresco. It was SO. DANG. GOOD. and on a homemade flour tortilla?? Amazing. I also highly recommend the Matcha Rider: Matcha green tea, Mayawell strawberry ginger hibiscus soda, and coconut cream foam. Such a tasty, unique drink.

What’s my favorite chicken sandwich in Austin, you ask? It’s gotta be The Lil’ Chicken Sandwich from Tumble 22. I get it “wimpy” because I’m always worried about things being too spicy, but that does NOT compromise the flavor. It’s serious a delicious chicken sandwich. The mix of the coleslaw too is *chefs kiss*. I always get the side of Mac and cheese. It’s super creamy and cheesy, just the way I like it. If I’m feeling crazy, I’ll get one of their frozen margaritas to go. It packs a punch, let me tell you!
