The Automat is in action at Brooklyn Dumpling Shop!

Austin’s most ⭐️ authentic ⭐️ dumplings? Not quite. Fun, quick, and open late? You bet! #hosted. The history of the Automat and the beginning of fast food is pretty interesting. The Brooklyn Dumpling Shop website has some great photos and History.com has a good little article. Basically, you purchase your food at a kiosk, it’s prepped in the back, and placed into a little temperature-controlled cubby. Then you use the barcode on your receipt to scan and open the cubby with your food!

As far as food goes, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop reimagines classic diners and sandwiches as dumplings. They’ve got Pastrami and Swiss dumplings, Mac and cheese dumplings, bacon cheeseburger dumplings, Philly cheesesteak dumplings… you get the idea.

I went with chicken parmesan dumplings 😆 They weren’t bad! They have a thicker dough and are fried, so they were more like little empanadas. I also tried the Thai Vegetable Curry potsticker in broth, but the potstickers were so big, they pretty much fell apart into the broth as soon as I tried to scoop them up.

The highlight of the meal was definitely dessert – I had the PB&J dumplings (don’t forget to add ice cream!). The fried dumplings are filled with peanut butter and drizzled with jam. Honestly? I loved them. They have Apple Pie dumplings, too.

I also think the prices are pretty good. You can get a specialty dumpling combo for $14: Your choice of specialty dumpling, a side, and a drink. Specialty dumplings on their own are $9, sides are $3-$6, dessert dumplings are $8.

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is meant to be fun, fast, and unique and I think they accomplished that! And remember – you’re using the same basic Automat design as America’s first fast food chain!
